Fireplace in Montreal – How to choose the right fireplace?
Did you know? The city of Montreal still allows the installation of wood-burning fireplaces on its territory. However, since October 1, 2018, if they wish to continue using it, citizens of the 19 boroughs of the city of Montreal must ensure that their wood-burning fireplaces emit less than 2.5 gr/h of particulates.
An old fireplace emits between 70 and 100 gr/h of particulate emissions. So it’s important to make sure you convert your appliance to a regulated energy-efficient model. Replacing your old wood-burning fireplace with a new one is a sensible choice that improves air quality. Ask for an EPA-certified wood-burning fireplace.
Good news! The City of Laval has also asked its citizens to replace their old fireplaces with new EPA-certified wood-burning fireplaces. Starting in 2026, citizens who want to use their appliance will have to replace their old fireplace with a new wood-burning one. What’s more, the city is offering incentives of up to $1,000.
